About Sam Gerson MD
Samuel (Sam) Gerson, MD, currently treats patients as an attending physician in the emergency department of the UC (University of California) San Diego Medical Center. There, he primarily works in the areas of emergency ultrasound and diving and hyperbaric medicine. Maintaining board certifications in the latter category, as well in emergency medicine, Sam Gerson, MD, further pursues his clinical interest in diving and hyperbaric medicine by affiliating with the American Academy of Underwater Scientists, through which he has performed as a research diver for projects with Northeastern University and the Scripps Institute of Oceanography.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Samuel Gerson spent time with the Wound and Hyperbaric Oxygen Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, where he functioned as a research assistant studying the use of hyperbaric oxygen in cases of carbon monoxide poisoning. Dr. Gerson has also conducted research on marine organisms’ anticancer and antiviral activity as a research assistant at the Scripps Oceanographic Institute’s Center for Marine Biotechnology and Biomedicine.
In addition to his work with leading medical institutions, Dr. Samuel Gerson has participated in numerous international projects. He served as an instructor at the Lebanese Society for Emergency Medicine’s 4th Annual Conference and as the triage director of a field hospital in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. For four years, the bilingual physician also cofounded and codirected an annual trauma and emergency medicine course in the Dominican Republic.
