Most recently, Samuel Gerson, MD, worked as an attending physician in the emergency department of the University of California-San Diego Medical Center. Dr. Sam Gerson is also affiliated with the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS), whose mission is to train medical personnel to work in challenging outdoor environments.
The WMS offers the Diploma in Mountain Medicine (DiMM). The DiMM is meant as continuing educations for physicians, nurses, medics, and other providers who work in mountain medicine search and rescue. Participants in the sessions must have some experience with rock climbing, back country hiking, and winter camping.
The curriculum consists of four week-long classroom and field instruction sessions; all four modules should be completed within two to three years. The two lecture-based sessions coincide with the WMA winter and summer conferences. The field instruction consists of alpine and rock skills and rescue components. The alpine program takes place on Mount Rainier in Washington and focuses on mountaineering rescue. Crag and cliff rescue is practiced in the rock session in Utah's Wasatch Range. Participants must complete open-book online exams after each session.
The DiMM meets standards set by the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation, the International Commission for Alpine Rescue, and the International Society for Mountain Medicine.
